
JOSEPH E. FLEMING, JR.
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Joseph E. Fleming, Jr. served on City Council from January 1, 1963 until his untimely death in June 6, 1979. He was elected Mayor five consecutive times by his colleagues. In January of 1981, by action of City Council, a City Park was named after him in recognition of his many years of dedicated public services. City Council at their meeting of July 17, 2006, after several meetings of discussion and preparation, adopted a new award program and named it in honor of Mr. Fleming. According to City Officials who knew him, his service and contribution to community exemplifies the essence of today’s Award program.
Purpose
Recognition of City of Titusville resident and/or organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to their community.
Criteria
Who is eligible: To be awarded to an individual citizen (5+ years of service) or entire community organization (20+ years of service). Person (s) can be currently serving on City Council, a City Board, Commission, or Authority, or a recognized Community organization that displays an excellence in service to the community.
When: This award/ recognition will be conducted at a regular meeting of City Council. This award may not be given every year but when an individual / group stands out for completing multiple years of dedicated service, completion of special projects, or other outstanding recognition activity.
How: To be considered for the recognition, persons may be nominated through application which is available in the City Manager’s Office. Applications will remain confidential and nominees will only be notified if they are selected.
Method of Selection: A Committee comprised of the City Manager, members of City Council, and City Department Heads will evaluate each application and forward nomination to City Council.
What: Recognition will include a plaque, proclamation and recognition day with evidence of the award displayed at City Hall.
